Carol P. Prentice knows first hand the benefits that can be achieved by applying the principles developed by F. M. Alexander over a century ago. As a dancer, she studied the styles of Isadora Duncan, Eric Hawkins and Martha Graham. At the age of eighteen was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis--a slippage of the 5th lumbar over the sacrum resulting in a three level spinal fusion, L4, L5 and S1.
Within a year she was back to studying dance at Western Michigan University, with a focus in Dance Education and Psychology. After two years her fusion began to come apart and her pain returned. It was at this time Carol was introduced to the Alexander Technique. She learned that by focusing on what Alexander called the “primary control”, the balanced relationship between the head, neck and torso, along with his other main principles, she was able to organize herself into a balanced state of movement. Carol became a student of the Alexander Technique and in 1983 trained with Frank Ottiwell at the Alexander Training Institute in San Francisco.
Over the past twenty-two years Carol has worked in conjunction with chiropractors, pain clinics and physical therapists. She has also worked with drama and music departments throughout California. Carol has developed The Poised Rider Equestrian Clinic for horseback riders that are seeking to gain more control and responsiveness from their horses. She has developed training sessions that are specifically tailored for musicians and performers, as well as chronic pain sufferers. Carol has several articles published on the benefits of the Alexander Technique and eliminating stress and tension in the body.
Ms. Prentice lives in Grass Valley, Ca. with her two daughters, where she maintains a private practice. She also holds workshops throughout California. She has been a faculty member of Hawaii Performing Arts Festival since 2005. Her e-mail is prentice_47@yahoo.com.
