Timothy Long, a young conductor of Choctaw and Creek Native American descent, is Music Director of Stony Brook Opera and Assistant to the Music Director of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. 2005 brought his mainstage debut at Boston Lyric Opera where he conducted Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince. The same year marked his debut performances at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis where he conducted both Rigoletto and Romeo and Juliet.
In the 2005-06 season his repertoire encompassed a diverse array of styles including Le Nozze di Figaro for Stony Brook Opera, Peter Maxwell Davies’ Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot with the Stony Brook Contemporary Chamber Players, Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen at The Juilliard School, both The Barber of Seville and Hansel and Gretel at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and The Music Teacher, an off-broadway play/opera by Wallace Shawn and Allen Shawn for The New Group, which ran at the Minetta Lane Theater for seven weeks. Previously at Stony Brook, Mr. Long has also led productions of Earl Kim’s Footfalls and Britten’s The Turn of the Screw.
In 2007, Mr. Long will conduct Mark-Anthony Turnage’s controversial modern adaptation of the Oedipus story Greek at Stony Brook, Conrad Susa’s Transformations for the University of Maryland and Don Giovanni in Castres, France before returning to Boston Lyric Opera for performances of Le Nozze di Figaro and then to St. Louis for performances of The Mikado and La Traviata.
Mr. Long served as assistant conductor to Robert Spano at the Brooklyn Philharmonic for three years and was an associate conductor at New York City Opera for two years. He has conducted three tours for Boston Lyric Opera-Opera New England as well as performances at The Juilliard School, Yale Opera, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic.
As a pianist he has collaborated with Susanne Mentzer, Jennifer Aylmer, William Sharp, Vinson Cole, Thomas Meglioranza and Christopheren Nomura and appeared on NBC’s Today Show with Salvatore Licitra. His chamber music partners have included the Pacifica, Euclid, Chester, and New Lyric string quartets.
Mr. Long studied piano and violin at Oklahoma City University while playing in the violin section of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. He completed his graduate work in piano performance and literature at the Eastman School of Music.
He is an artist-faculty member at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and at the Aspen Music Festival and School. His previous teaching positions include Yale University, The Juilliard School, and the Fondazione William Walton Masterclasses in Italy.
